Poet, artist and Kobzar (a bard in Ukrainian culture), Taras Shevchenko dared to use art to express the conditions of the servile life of Ukrainians under the russian empire. Taras was imprisoned by Tsar Nicolas I for being critical of russian oppression. He spent more than 10 years in exile, far away from Ukraine, but it didn’t stop him from creating art, and enriching Ukrainian culture.
