About the book
SAINTS is an evocative photobook by acclaimed Ukrainian photographer Sasha Maslov, capturing the poignant stories and portraits of Ukrainians caught in the maelstrom of the Russian war against Ukraine from 2022 to 2023. In this compelling collection, Maslov redefines modern sanctity and self-sacrifice.
The photobook comprises over 100 intimate photos and stories, featuring those who serve in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, dedicated volunteers, and civilians whose everyday actions contribute to the defense of Ukraine. Tragically, many of the heroes and heroines depicted have died fighting for Ukraine’s freedom, making SAINTS both a somber tribute to lost lives and a celebration of survival and resilience.
“This is a book about the personal sacrifice of people who chose to resist this brutal and barbaric invasion, happening in Europe in the 21st century as the whole World keeps watching. This is a book about godless sainthood,” — Sasha Maslov.
About the project
In the summer of 2022, Saint Javelin partnered with Sasha Maslov to support his inspiring vision of the portrait photobook of the war. Over the past two years, we have dedicated immense resources to this project, made possible by the unwavering support of the Saint Javelin community, who believed in it from day one. The pre-order support enabled Sasha to travel across Ukraine, capturing the stories and portraits of extraordinary individuals. Once all the materials were ready, a talented team from IST Publishing helped us bring this project to the finish line and publish the book in Ukraine.
30% of the net profits from the sale of the book will be donated towards purchasing tactical medical equipment for the Armed Forces of Ukraine through the Ukrainian World Congress “Unite with Ukraine” initiative.

Book came in perfect condition, excellent pictures and stories from all involved defending their home.
Emotional pictures and percuting stories that must be shared! Outstanding concept!
Great photos and Content. Thank you!
This book is amazing. It is real. It shows the strength and the spirit of the Ukrainian people; they l will not be broken. It was hard not to feel the weight of each photo and story in my heart, but I would do so a thousand times over if it means to support this country.
It is a fascinating insight into the folks involved.
The book isn't on the cheap side. However, when I read parts of it on Sasha Maslov's website I was sold. The book has inspiring and touching stories about Ukrainian heroes. It shows the brutal aspects of war too. Overall if you are interested in this war it's a must read.
WOW! was surprised when I opened the book. I thought it contain stories of units and their accomplishments. I found myself glued to the book because each page was dedicated to one individual solider. Reading. their story felt like the individual was sitting across the table, listing to them talk. If.. you want to read about the war, read this book .
Incredible book. Of course, sometimes sad to read, but much of it uplifting. The high average age of those featured surprised me, until I learnt of the losses of a generation caused by the Soviet Union previously.
Everyone needs to read a copy.
This is an amazing book. It was going to be a gift but I’ve kept it for myself. I’ll let my friend borrow it some time later. :)
Super important work.
This book is in my living space and in my line of sight every day. The Ukrainian PATRIOTS - men & women, young & old, civilian & military - are all amazing. Each story is a picture of strength and solidarity.
The book is much better than I expected! It's not at all mawkish or self-congratulatory. The photographs don't seek aesthetic beauty (though they often achieve it) but each brings out the character and the trace of the harsh experience endured by the person featured. The text sets each person's heroic contribution in the context of the wider events of the war, sometimes also including the author's own perceptions and recollections, which enhance the reader's awareness that all this is actually happening now. The book paints a portrait of a society reacting, individually and collectively, with fortitude and self-sacrifice to an awful challenge which no-one sought and few expected. Whatever happens this work will serve as a record and a reminder of what courage in extraordinary circumstances can achieve, to inspire and motivate us wherever we are.
The book is stunning, a tribute to the best of humanity and a piece of history. The photographs are incredible in their detail and solemn beauty. Thank you! I will keep my first purchase for myself but will order more to give to those whose hearts ache for Ukraine. Слава Україні!
They do say a picture is worth a thousand words, the pictures themselves are moving and tell stories, add in the words and you have a powerful emotional book.
Beautiful coffee table book with photographs and biographies of the courageous Ukrainian citizens caught up in the maelstrom of Russia's unprovoked invasion. Includes accounts of soldiers, civilians, aid workers, first responders and politicians. The Saints Book is both heartbreaking and inspiring to read.
Actually, I found it quite difficult to give a review of the book, because words quickly seem inadequate here. Where to start? The size and weight of the book match the enormous importance of its contents. This book is packed with beautiful, impressive photos and very personal stories. Of Ukrainians who are confronted with a horrific attack on their country and bravely resist it. Each in their own valuable and dignified way.
I didn't have to think about whether I should support the creation of this book; the support for the Ukrainian people was and is self-evident. Of course, this book cannot be compared to the Bible, or any other religious writing. And I certainly don't want to offend anyone by saying this, but to me, 'Saints' is a holy book.
Many thanks to everyone who made this book possible! Slava Ukraini, Heroyam Slava!
I was born in Ukraine, and when I saw opening salvos of the war on tv two years ago I knew I had to do something to help the people who brought me into this world.
But what could I do? This book was the answer. Two years of hard work bound together in this wonderful book. Filled with photos that are both beautiful and horrific, and every story being simultaneously inspiring, heart wrenching, and heroic.
I am proud have done, and will continue to be a part of this project in preserving the memory of the saints who defend Ukraine and the world form the greatest evil of our time.
Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!
I'm so happy to be one of the first to receive this wonderful book. A emotional and compelling reminder that we should never give up. Keep supporting St Javelin and Ukraine! Slava Ukraini.
The stories and the photos are amazing. The strength, courage and determination of the Ukrainian people leaves me stunned. So much bravery and dedication. Fighting an enemy so evil, cruel and inhumane.
The book is excellent and high quality in both print and material. The only negative was the packaging, only a simple envelope without protective cover. Sadly my book was damaged during shipping.
Slava Ukraini
I received my copy of your book, “Saints” a few weeks ago. I was initially surprised by how heavy the delivery box was, but once I opened the box, it became very clear of just how big this project has been for you. I can not imagine the effort of interviewing and photographing so many people actively involved in war. I have already looked through many of the remarkable accounts and really appreciate how you focused on the human side of heroics. Collectively this is an outstanding piece of work. I am intentionally leaving it out in my living area so that any family or visitors can view it. None of us will ever understand what those conditions are like, but they will know of its existence thanks to your efforts.
When I first saw the book, I was immediately drawn to that haunting image on the front cover. The older gentleman on the extreme left side of the photo should be taking a walk with his Grandchildren not donning a war helmet. To me, the people of the Ukraine are the bravest people on this planet. I will continue to support organizations that will help the people of the Ukraine and vote for government representatives in this country, that will also support the Ukraine’s enormous efforts.
Thank-you for all you are doing.
Poignant and haunting, this book is an incredible documentation of the horrid crimes of Russia and the inspiring, indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people. This book takes it's place in history as a, "must read". Bravo!!!
Review regarding the book Saints.
I am writing this review a bit later than I actually wanted to.
The reason for this is that the book has affected me enormously. I have picked up the book several times, looked at photos and read the accompanying texts.
It is the story of a country, of people who have been dragged into a war. It has affected me enormously how people deal with the war. How they take action to drive out the enemy, how they want to help each other. But also how people deal with serious injuries and mutilations.
Because of life experience I always look at people's eyes. The eyes say a lot about people and what is going on in their minds. It is striking that many eyes show the same look of uncertainty, fear, inner anger and fatigue. Understandable when you realize that the war has been going on for years.
It makes me sad and gives me a powerless feeling. The feeling of destroying those Orcs and their poisoned country once and for all.
Coming back to the book itself:
It is a very good book! It presents in an open and honest way the people who live in a country ravaged by war. The photos are of very good quality and the texts are enlightening and sometimes poignant.
Actually, everyone should see/read this book.
I haven't read the entire book yet, but I am deeply touched by the fate of these saints. Yesterday they were completely "normal" people, today a war has forced them to make sacrifices for themselves and for others. But these fates show that extreme situations can also bring out the best in people. I have incredible respect for the perseverance and attitude of the Ukrainians. It is incredible what you do and have to do. Please hold on! I am waiting for the day when Ukraine celebrates its victory and successful resistance and reconstruction begins! Thank you for this book, it has a place of honor on the shelf..
History on every page. I am also in awe of the brave people depicted.
This book shouldn't exist. The people featured in this book should not have been forced into the awful positions that they now find themselves in. None of these situations should have happened.
This is a book about people who stepped up and did what was right. It's a triumph of photography and portrait.
After I reed the book ill donate it to public library. I`m Polish living in Norwich England and my whole forklift is cover with your stickers. Glory to Ukraine. God bless.
This book offers a lot of stories from civilian and military persons. The photography is amazing. It is a must buy for anyone wanting to preserve the history of the Ukrainian War and the people involved.
