Ultralight Power Grid: the raised squares on the inside hold the warmth.
It's lighter than a flat fleece, so you get the warmth without the weight.

One angled zip pocket, set into the nylon panel.
Zip it shut and small things don't bounce out while you run or hike fast.

It packs down small.
It comes on every run and fast hike, even when the pack's already full.

Power Grid
Polartec created synthetic fleece in 1981 and supplied the fleece behind Patagonia's first Synchilla and The North Face's Denali. Power Grid is its grid fleece: raised squares hold warmth, and the channels between them move sweat and air out.
That’s the US Army’s Gen III cold-weather Level II layer: the grid-knit shirt and drawers nicknamed the “waffle”. Power Grid is the fleece in this Quarter-Zip.
Military facts are about Polartec's fabrics, not our garments, which aren't military issue. Sources: Polartec (Soldier Systems Daily and Textile World, 2019); Defense Media Network (2013). Image is a 3D render.
Why not just a regular fleece?
Power Grid does two jobs: one while you're moving, one when you stop. Switch between them.
