1

Go hard without soaking through

Polartec Power Grid: the channels between its raised squares move sweat and air out.

More breathable than a flat fleece, and it stretches, so it moves with you.

2

Surprisingly warm for how light it is

Ultralight Power Grid: the raised squares on the inside hold the warmth.

It's lighter than a flat fleece, so you get the warmth without the weight.

3

Keys and gels stay put on the move

One angled zip pocket, set into the nylon panel.

Zip it shut and small things don't bounce out while you run or hike fast.

4

Always room for it in the pack

It packs down small.

It comes on every run and fast hike, even when the pack's already full.

Where we've taken it

The material we use

Power Grid

  • Holds warmth
  • Moves sweat out
  • Stretch
  • Packs small
The original fleece

Polartec created synthetic fleece in 1981 and supplied the fleece behind Patagonia's first Synchilla and The North Face's Denali. Power Grid is its grid fleece: raised squares hold warmth, and the channels between them move sweat and air out.

Army issue

The Army’s “waffle” layer is made from it

That’s the US Army’s Gen III cold-weather Level II layer: the grid-knit shirt and drawers nicknamed the “waffle”. Power Grid is the fleece in this Quarter-Zip.

Why not just a regular fleece?

A flat fleece soaks through when you go hard. Then it freezes you when you stop.

Power Grid does two jobs: one while you're moving, one when you stop. Switch between them.

Moving: the sweat gets out The channels between the squares let sweat and air move out, so you don't soak through.
