Ukraine now has one of the largest concentrations of landmines worldwide, with an estimated 174,000 square kilometres suspected to be contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance (UXOs), an area roughly equivalent to the size of Florida and comprising about 30 percent of Ukraine's territory. Following the end of the war, multiple generations of Ukrainians will grapple with the hazardous legacy of minefields. The accompanying photograph illustrates the marking of these perilous areas.
