Question 1

Why is it $135?

Because of four things we will not cut: the fabric (Polartec Power Grid), the reinforcement (stretch nylon on the forearms), the design work, and where it is made (Ukraine).

Strip any of them out and the price drops. So does how long it lasts.

Question 2

What does Power Grid actually do for me?

It keeps you warm while you work hard without soaking you in sweat. Raised squares hold warmth, the channels between them let sweat and heat out, so you do not freeze when you stop.

It is the grid fleece Polartec says the US Army’s ECWCS Gen III Level II layer, nicknamed “the waffle”, is made from.

Question 3

Will it last?

We took it five days and 55 km off-trail in the Yukon backcountry, with nights down to −10 °C, with a pack on every day. The forearms are stretch nylon because that is where rock and straps wear a fleece through first.

Question 4

Why make it in Ukraine?

Because that is who we are. Saint Javelin started in Ukraine’s darkest month and now makes everything there. It is cut and sewn in Ukraine, by teams who keep working through blackouts.

Question 5

Is there a cheaper option?

Plenty. You can find a cheaper fleece. But if it holds up off-trail in the Yukon, it will hold up for you.

Where this came from

Why a sticker brand makes a premium fleece

We started in 2022 with a sticker. We could have kept printing logos on cheap blanks. Instead we spent four years learning to make gear that lasts, in Ukraine.

  1. February 2022
    It started with a sticker

Journalist Christian Borys prints a sticker: a saint in green robes holding a Javelin. He hopes to raise a few hundred dollars for Ukraine. Days later Russia launches its full-scale invasion, and the saint goes around the world.

  2. 2022
    Made in Ukraine

We stop being a meme and start being a maker. Production moves into Ukraine, and we start learning how to make things that last.

  3. November 2023
    The first Defender

Our first cold-weather collection: a fleece, and the padded work socks people still buy from us today.

  4. 2024
    Polartec arrives

Defender moves to Polartec: quarter-zip fleeces, a sherpa hoodie and thermals. Customers start calling them the best fleece they own.

  5. 2025
    Into the mountains

The Karpathian Sherpa fleece, shot with Ukrainian veterans hiking the Carpathian mountains. Our first real step into outdoor gear.

  6. 2026
    Tested in the Yukon

Defender 2026: Polartec Power Grid, Micro 100, 200 and High Loft, cut and sewn in Ukraine. Before it went on sale we wore it for five days and 55 km off-trail in the Yukon backcountry, with nights down to −10 °C.

Questions we get

Why does it cost $135?

The fabric is Polartec Power Grid, the panels are stretch nylon, the design took a lot of work, and it is cut and sewn in Ukraine rather than wherever is cheapest. You can find a cheaper fleece. We think this one earns its price by lasting.

What is it for?

High-output days: fast hiking, approaches, running in the cold, the walk in before dawn. Wear it next to skin or over a base layer, under a warmer layer when you stop.

Is it warm enough on its own?

On the move in cool weather, yes. When you stop in real cold, add an insulating layer such as the Ninja Hoodie or the High Loft Jacket.

What is it made of?

Polartec Power Grid (90% polyester, 10% elastane) with stretch nylon panels. Label composition: 70% polyester, 20% nylon, 10% elastane.

Where is it made?

Cut and sewn in ukraine, by teams who keep working through blackouts.

Tough gear, for tough people.
