Graveyard of Destroyed Russian Equipment in Hostomel Airport – November 2022.
This photo was taken by the award-winning Ukrainian photographer Sasha Maslov.
The Battle of Hostomel marked the initial major engagement in the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, centering on control of the town of Hostomel between Russian and Ukrainian armed forces. As part of the Kyiv offensive, Russian troops aimed to secure Hostomel, Bucha, and Irpin to encircle and besiege the Ukrainian capital from the west.
Initially intending a swift capture of Kyiv to disrupt Ukrainian government command and control, Russian plans faltered despite capturing the airport, as they were unable to establish an airbridge. The fierce fighting in and around Hostomel stood as a pivotal moment in the invasion's early stages, thwarting Russian ambitions of a rapid Ukrainian takeover. With their operational objective unmet, Russian forces withdrew not only from Hostomel but also from all of Kyiv Oblast in early April, leaving behind a trail of hundreds of destroyed equipment.
