In May 2022, Russian forces escalated their offensive maneuvers around Lyman, eventually seizing control of the town by month's end. Ukrainian troops retreated to the southern sector of the city, mounting determined resistance, although some soldiers were captured during the encirclement. Following the final evacuation of civilians and provision of supplies for remaining residents, the last Ukrainian forces vacated Lyman on May 26, demolishing the sole remaining bridge as they departed.
However, by September 2022, during the Kharkiv counteroffensive, the Ukrainian Armed Forces approached Lyman and nearly encircled Russian troops. The first videos depicting the liberation of Lyman began circulating online on October 1, 2022. Situated just a few dozen kilometers from the frontlines, Lyman remains under the looming threat of further Russian aggression, yet Ukrainian forces valiantly maintain their defensive stance in the vicinity of the town.
