1

Keep the wind off your face

The hood zips up into a balaclava, so there's nothing extra to carry.

The half-zip runs up into a fitted hood. Zip it all the way and it closes around your face, held by an elastic-bound opening.

Drag the line across the photo: balaclava on, balaclava off.

2

Stay warm on the cold stops

Polartec 200 Midweight breathes while you move and dries fast once you stop.

Polartec's original midweight fleece, 251 gsm. It resists pilling and keeps its look after a season of washing.

3

Warm hands, nothing lost

Two angled zips open into one big kangaroo pocket.

Zip them shut and your phone and keys stay put. The fleece side sits against your hands.

4

Go off-trail without tearing it up

Stretch-nylon panels take the scrapes where plain fleece rips and tears.

They cover the forearms and lower sides, where brush, rock and pack straps rub. They stretch, so they never restrict.

5

Seal the heat in, or let it out

A bungee hem with a cord lock.

Cinch it to stop cold air coming up from below, or loosen it to vent when you're working hard.

Where we've taken it

We put it through some sh*t.

Out of a helicopter, through Ironman training, five days off-trail in the Yukon. Each one maps to a day you'll actually have.

The original fleece

Polartec created synthetic fleece in 1981 and supplied the fleece behind Patagonia's first Synchilla and The North Face's Denali. Polartec 200 is its original midweight: 251 gsm, warm, breathable, quick to dry.

Army issue

The US Army issued this fleece

Polartec 200 was the fleece in the Army's Gen II cold-weather bib overalls. The same fleece is in this hoodie.

Why not just a regular fleece hoodie?

Most fleece hoodies stop at your chin.

Even a good technical fleece hoodie usually gives you a hood and nothing more. When the wind picks up, your face is out in it, and your balaclava is wherever you left it.
